GOAT MEAT?

Going under the names Cabrito or Chevon you will also find goat referred to simply as kid or goat.  Whilst goat is believed to make up 80% of the total meat consumed in the world, it is considerably under consumed in the U.K.  With a taste between lamb and beef it appeals to many people.  In addition, being low in cholesterol, high in iron and ounce for ounce having less fat than chicken and about the same calories, goat is the ideal meat for the health conscious.

Much of the goat eaten in Britain is the "waste" or cull from dairy herds but increasingly the Boer Goat, a breed originating in South Africa developed specifically for its meat, is being crossed with dairy goats or bred specially for its meat.

The meat taken from the Boer or Boer cross bred kids is generally better in both texture and flavour than meat taken from a dairy animal as is true of the difference between beef and dairy cows. For this reason we produce only meat from this type of animal.

WHO ARE WE?

Located South of Lancaster and starting in 2000 the Cockerham herd is one of the country's longest established meat goat herds.
Based on the Boer goat we produce only high quality goat meat all of which is born on site guaranteeing the animals quality of care both before and during slaughter.
These high standards are also used in the hanging and cutting of the meat which is performed by a small local licensed butcher.
Using around 100 females we run a medium sized, free-range herd which is able to run commercially whilst remaining small enough to avoid intensive farming systems.
Meat production is our primary aim,  supporting breeders concerned with the preservation and improvement of the Boer Goat as a Breed.
We also use some full blood Cashmere does  in the herd as they carry a good quantity of meat and cross well with the Boer.

Kidding indoors away from predators our goats then have free access to grazing and shelter for as much of the year as possible, leading as natural a life as they can, they are only housed in particularly bad weather conditions.   Contrary to popular belief whilst the goat must have access to shelter they do enjoy being out to grass.

As one of the longest established producers of quality goat meat in the UK we are sadly aware of the increase in availability of poor quality cheap goat meat. This is often taken from elderly animals or dairy kids or worse still old sheep.

Please be aware that goats can no more be produced cheaply in a humane fashion than chickens can be produced humanely for supermarkets to sell 2 for £5

Please make sure when purchasing goat meat from other suppliers that you are actually buying good quality traceable meat from a reputable source. If a butcher is unable or unwilling to tell you the supplier you should question its authenticity.

Satisfied Customers!

"Well, we tried some of the chops last night and only one way to describe them….fantastic. The quality of the meat is excellent, I really must commend you on the way you raise your animals, and it was very nicely butchered as well."

QUALITY GUARANTEE

All our meat animals are born and reared on our farm and therefore we are able to guarantee both the traceability of our meat and the standard of care it has received both whilst alive and after slaughter. All our meat is produced from prime young stock between the ages of 6 and 18 months as such it is a succulent and flavour some meat. When well cooked it is beautifully tender and creates a wonderful roast dinner in addition to the believed more traditional dishes such as curries.

WHERE CAN YOU GET GOAT MEAT?

Although goat meat is readily available in the UK it can be difficult to track down.  We find that production is far outweighed by demand, which has led us to significantly increase production over the last few years. By 2005 we were using carefully selected home bred does. We place an emphasis on carcass quality and speed of growth in our selection process. Whilst 2006 saw a further increase in production we maintain a close relationship with our stock to ensure all animals receive the  individual attention they need.

Pre ordered meat can be collected directly from our farm. We also now offer a mail order service.

Satisfied Customers!   "Could you let me know when you will be able to spare a full carcase. The last one I had from you was superb."

So go on have a go at goat!
